Abstract
This Manufacturing Insights update is the first in an ongoing series of updates
on sustainability and "IT for green" as part of our Emerging Agenda program.
This document provides a summary of meaningful events, trends, and/or case
studies related to IT' s role in supporting sustainability initiatives in
product life-cycle economics and the supply chain. We' ll also discuss recent
compliance changes, either voluntary or regulated, and new products and
capabilities from IT vendors and present a business case study in manufacturing.
In its most basic definition, sustainability means "meeting the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs." Many companies also use other terms to describe this - green,
environmental excellence, corporate social responsibility, and more. Our
research applies the term sustainability primarily to include company
initiatives or policies related to environmental or green issues. We are not
tracking general corporate social responsibility initiatives related to social
or economic issues such as employee benefits or nonenvironmental community
programs.
