Abstract
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is one of the most talked-about emerging
technologies that promises to bring significant benefits to manufacturing,
retail, and logistics businesses, among others. However, most implementations
in the manufacturing sector in the recent past focused on asset tracking and
supply chain visibility, instead of applying the RFID technology in a shop
floor.
"Justifying investment in RFID typically requires a successful pilot project.
Haier' s RFID implementation is a good example of how a manufacturer uses RFID
technology to manage in-process workflow and eliminate errors arising out of
discrepancies in shop-floor processes. This study also discusses business
drivers, solution strategy, and benefits realized from an RFID implementation
in a production environment," says Debashis Tarafdar, associate research
director, Manufacturing Insights.
