INTRODUCTION
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder of the central
nervous system characterized by the progressive and irreversible loss of nerve
cells in brain areas responsible for controlling thought, memory, and
language. AD drug medications work to delay the onset of symptoms and slightly
improve cognition.
MARKET HIGHLIGHTS
In 2004, the global market for AD medications (consisting of US, France,
Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Japan) generated revenues of over $2.6
billion. The US market was the single-largest market for AD drug medications
accounting for over half of all global revenues. The global AD drug market
will continue to experience strong growth over the forecast period driven by
increasing AD prevalence, physician and patient awareness, improved diagnostic
