Abstract

Description

802.11 (WiFi) solutions have achieved critical mass around the globe in a relatively short period of time. Its resounding success in terms of equipment sales and usage has led to numerous incarnations aimed at improving throughput and reach for both consumer and enterprise use, as well as the emerging government sector. WiFi is now positioned to reach even higher throughput levels and wider reach with the upcoming 802.11n standard, making WiFi even more integrated into the long term telecom landscape.

However, a growing debate has brewed over recent months as certification and standardization has slowed, which has confused end users on whether to invest in the new standard. The "n" standard, which is being pushed by vendors, is likewise being pulled by end user demand as content and applications require more robust pipes and larger footprints. Form factors from traditional laptop computers and cellphones are moving to TV sets and other appliances in households and business tools in enterprises.

The main issue of interoperability is leading to "buyer beware" warnings for pre-802.11n products, particularly in the enterprise sector. It is argued that an investment today may become obsolete (at best) or limited in use (at worst) since it will not interoperate with other products within a year when the "n" standard has been fully ratified.

But the market can't seem to wait, and neither can the vendors pushing the new standard. Pre-certified 802.11n products are now available and coming shortly from vendors such as chip giant Intel, which has publicly stated that it will incorporate a pre-standard version of IEEE 802.11n WiFi into Centrino chips by 2007.
