Abstract
Our report addresses a multitude of issues associated with OLT, including technical
implementations and marketing perception. Particular, this report intends to answer at least the
following questions:
- What is the outlook for the market?
- Who are major market players?
- What are the legal directives and restrictions (if any) shaping the market?
- What standardization bodies are involved and how advanced are they in their work?
- What technologies does OLT support?
- What architecture types are being proposed?
- What products are available today?
The report consists of the two major parts and it addresses the following major items:
- Technology
- Standardization process
- Trends
- Requirements
- Specifics
- Roadblocks
- Competitors
- Architecture
- Applications
- Market
- Trends

- Forecast
- Vendors and their portfolio
- Service Providers
The OLT is an integral and important part of the Passive Optical Networks, which orchestrates and
supervises all signal activity. We provided a detailed analysis of PON technologies and
corresponding OLTs and developed technical-economical characteristics for this device. Based on our
survey of the vendors portfolios and the analysis available data we determined that E-PON and B-PON
are two prevailing technologies. Geographically, E-PON dominates the Asian market, where high-speed
data services are the major subscribers requirements. The structure of this market is based on
IP-topology. In the U.S., where the services are more legacy-oriented, B-PON plays the major role.
G-PON is also coming to the picture, but is less popular.
We analyzed the OLT market as derivative of the total PON market and provided various market
characteristics.
The significance of this report is difficult to overestimate. The document analyzes a complex of
issues associated with the development of OLTs, and we are evaluating the current trends and
problems with telecommunications technology to support respective services. We show technological
trends and developments of the market and we stress the importance to implement of PON-based
services in which OLT plays critical role.
Research Methodology
Considerable research was done using the Internet. Information from various Web sites was studied
and analyzed. Evaluation of publicly available marketing and technical publications was conducted.
Telephone conversations and interviews were held with industry analysts, technical experts and
executives. In addition to these interviews and primary research, secondary sources were used to
develop a more complete mosaic of the market landscape, including industry and trade publications,
conferences and seminars.
The overriding objective throughout the work has been to provide valid and relevant information.
This has led to a continual review and update of the information content.
Target Audience
This report is important to a wide population of researches, technical and sales staff involved
in the developing of the PON services and products. It is recommended for both service providers and
vendors that are working with related technologies. The report also helps to understand issues
associated with relationship between PON and other technologies.
