Abstract
Modernization of the electricity supply network appears overdue and the most
powerful way of upgrading it is though a marriage of electric supply and
digital communications technology to create an intelligent grid. This grid is
expected to be much more flexible and resilient than the current grid.
Moreover most of the advanced components necessary for its construction are
already available. One of the other key developments of the twenty-first
century is the introduction of large volumes of electricity generated from
renewable sources of energy. This has presented problems for the traditional
grid but these problems can be largely overcome using intelligent grid
concepts. The combination of the two is likely to define the electricity
supply system of the future.
