Abstract

The new Roskill report on the petroleum coke industry is close to completion and is due to be published in early January 2007. It will provide detailed and up-to-date market analysis of resources, production, consumption, end-use market trends, international trade and prices.

Like all Roskill reports, this new edition of The Economics of Petroleum Coke will give you a completely impartial industry overview. Our expert researchers have made a thorough and objective analysis of all available data from the worlds most reliable statistical and news sources, including a wide and invaluable network of industry contacts. Thats why the breadth, depth, accuracy and expertise of our research is unparalleled.

The new edition of this report has been extensively revised and updated, containing the most up-to-date information available on the petroleum coke industry.

This report offers you in-depth, independent analysis of the current and future supply, demand from end-use markets and the implications of changes in technology.

At the start of 2006, global production capacity for marketable petroleum coke was more than 80Mtpy, with almost half of it located at refineries in the USA. By the end of this decade as much as 35Mtpy of new capacity may be operational.

Although widely distributed throughout the world, ownership of marketable coke capacity is highly and increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of companies, with just seven controlling about 70% of the total.

World production of petroleum coke (both catalyst and marketable) passed the 100Mt mark in 2004 and indications are that the growth in output continues. It is forecast that global output could reach nearly 120Mtpy by the end of the decade.

While the long-term trends in most end-use markets for petroleum coke remain healthy, demand for coke may not necessarily follow suit. In fuel applications, such as cement production, coke faces increasing competition from alternatives, waste fuels in particular. Similarly, widespread adoption of inert anode technology by the aluminium industry would have major ramifications for one of petroleum coke' s largest non-fuel applications.
