Following deregulation, Malaysia's wireless industry is changing to a more transparent and liberalized structure promoting increased competition. With local carriers starting to leverage on partnerships with global telecommunications leaders, the rollout of next generation services and applications is well on its way.
Malaysia's mobile market has seen remarkable growth over the last few years. There were 8.5 million mobile phone subscribers as of end 2002, and is expected to reach 11 million by the end 2003. At the same time, mobile penetration is expected to reach 55% by end 2003. Rising affluence, lower handset and service charges and its large youth segment are amongst the key drivers for growth in this market.
Strategic Intelligence Research predicts that mobile adoption in Malaysia will continue to grow significantly through to 2006-2007, where penetration will level out at about 66%. Mobile carriers and phone vendors can take refuge in the fact that there is still room for growth given that mobile adoption in Malaysia still lags that in other Asia Pacific markets like Singapore and Hong Kong.
