Assessing a Critical Need

Treatment of chronic pain is one of the greatest challenges facing contemporary medical practice. Approximately one percent of the population (2.5 million people) in the United States suffers from moderate to severe neuropathic pain associated with the conditions evaluated in this report. In recent years, neuropathic pain has received particular attention due to the severity and duration of the pain and its relative resistance to conventional analgesic therapies. Importantly, many analgesic drugs, from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to strong opiates, have proven to be either ineffective or to provide only limited relief. In fact, few pharmacological therapies have been approved specifically for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Given the wide prevalence of neuropathic pain, there is a critical need to develop novel therapies that are safe and effective.

The primary areas that need improvement include:

  • Analgesic efficacy (greater specificity and potency)
  • Improved safety/side effects (minimize undesirable side effects such as arrhythmia and sedation)
  • Mechanism specificity (targeted to the underlying pathophysiology, rather than symptoms)
  • Synergistic treatment options (multiple pharmacological approaches)
  • Evidence in trials, which use appropriate patient qualification
  • Objective measures (clinically valid pain scales and quality of life assessment scales).

Recent research elucidating the mechanisms of neuropathic pain has provided new targets for pharmacological interventions that have captured the attention of the pharmaceutical industry. This report summarizes our current understanding of neuropathic pain mechanisms, and highlights promising targets for drug development. Also summarized are new treatments already in development that offer the promise of improved pain management of neuropathic pain in the near future.

Report Methodology

  • Market projections from 2002 to 2012 and patient-population projections to 2012 based on a consensus developed from industry experience, clinician input, and other market predictions
  • An in-depth analysis of the medical literature, including treatment review articles, medical textbooks, epidemiology studies, and clinical studies
  • A review of prescriptions written for specific conditions, including estimations of prescription size, number of refills, and cost
  • In-put from clinicians, including medical directors of selected pain centers
