The high speed interface landscape is filled with standards. Just when companies have made their development investment in one interface, another standard comes along to limit their returns. The new standard typically doubles, quadruples or multiplies by ten the existing interface speed. But it can also be a new variant of an existing interface, complicating the market dynamics and diluting the TAM. Fibre Channel users are going down the times-two speed route, embracing 4Gbps interfaces with 8Gbps interfaces in their sights. For the Enterprise, there are over half a dozen 10 Gigabit Ethernet standards, with five alone covering copper, single- and multi-mode fiber to distances from 20m to 10km. In 2007 two of these five will start shipping: the 10GBASE-T copper standard aimed at the data centre, and the 10GBASE-LRM multimode fibre standard for the building and campus.

Revenue for the online gaming market in the Asia/Pacific region is expected to grow rapidly between 2008 and 2013 as consumer awareness increases and new technologies allow for greater content and variety of games. Total revenue for the Asia/Pacific region stood at US$5.8 billion in 2007 and is expected to reach US$21.1 billion in 2013, a CAGR of 20.6%. The major factors driving this growth include growing household Internet penetration, increased content development for online-specific games, wider access mediums to accelerate demand, and the unique experience that online gaming offers. Online games are no longer restricted to slow-action strategy games. Faster connections are allowing the popular Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) to be developed and enter the mainstream. In turn, this is rapidly increasing consumer acceptance of the Internet as an entertainment medium.

Lets see, oh well, femtocell technology is an industry-changing innovation. Dual-mode WiFi/cellular phones are not nearly as cost effective as femtocells. Femtocells are emerging as the main technologies that will link the indoor and outdoor networks. Femtocells are particularly attractive to mobile carriers.

Mobile and Wireless in the US: Opportunities and Profits 2008-2012

The US is expected to add more than 65 million mobile subscribers to the worldwide subscriber base in the period 2007-2012. This might look relatively insignificant compared to the massive numbers expected to be added from high-growth markets such as China (542 million) and India (282 million), but what makes the US mobile market an interesting market to study is the observation that a new mobile subscriber in the US is expected to generate between three and 13 times as much revenue expected from a new mobile subscriber in China, India and the other emerging markets in the top 10 in 2012. Compounding this aggressive growth is the high ARPU network operators in the US achieve from their subscribers. Unlike many other mature mobile markets, where ARPU is in slow decline, in the US ARPU is forecast to remain high, even increasing slightly from 2007 levels as we move forward over the next 4 or 5 years. While the US will contribute only around 5.5 percent to the total number of new subscribers that are expected from the top 10 markets in the period 2007-2012, in terms of revenue, the country will account for around 25.2 percent of the total mobile service revenues generated by these 10 markets in 2012. This significant revenue potential makes the US mobile market a very important market in the worldwide scenario. This report probes into the opportunities presented by the US mobile market through a holistic understanding of the current state of the market and its expected future movement.

Item level RFID is the tagging of the smallest taggable unit of things - the piece of apparel, library book, jewellery, engineering parts and laundry are examples. It used to be thought that item level RFID meant little more than tagging very low cost retail items - something to do last of all. However, it has become big business and far more profitable than many other RFID sectors because it gives excellent paybacks to everyone, not just retailers. We assess over 100 case studies such as Marks & Spencer in the UK using over 100 Million RFID tags to date to tag clothing and increase sales by reducing stockouts, in addition to others such as American Apparel doing similar work and reporting sales increases by 15% to 25% when all items are available on the floor.

R-OADMs From the Core to the Edge

Now in nearly mid-2008, the ROADM has become a standard part of long-haul networks - to be included as a matter of course in any new network - and they have become a major update objective for existing networks. They have also become important to metro networks. Now the application that is driving cost savings is the use of low-cost ROADMs on the edge of the network. (See the material on Nistica, particularly, and others in the Systems Vendors' section.) In addition to the maturity of application, ROADMs have also developed a third-generation technology base - the wavelength selective switch (WSS) - that has quickly become the gold standard. Our focus for this report is the edge ROADM. There are forecasts (probably the first available anywhere), application sketches, complete vendor coverage, technology discussions, etc - all aimed at the edge ROADM. While the edge ROADM is our focus, the report also contains a complete update on all aspects of core and metro ROADMs, as well - including forecasts (with component forecast separately provided), application information, full technology discussions, and complete vendor information. This is the author' s fifth major report on ROADMs since 2002 - all part of the Lightwave Series of Reports brought to you by Information Gatekeepers. The author has also written a number of reports on ROADM components (also from IGI) and has consulted extensively on ROADMs.

As we move towards the so-called ‘cashless' society, and consumers increasingly want the ability to make payments online and on their mobile phones - safe in the knowledge that transactions are secure - the face of the payments landscape is changing. Card payments have increasingly become an important part of our everyday lives, especially as more and more people utilize the Internet and financial institutions offer various payment services that preclude writing checks or using cash. From a business standpoint and despite growing transaction volumes, financial institutions are facing margin pressures on their payments businesses as competition has grown. From a technology standpoint, there has been little change in the past two decades. However, there are indications that suggest the next few years will yield interesting developments. This report considers the current market for payments technologies and provides an analysis of how the sector could evolve.

One of the biggest challenges facing wireless subscribers is a lack of indoor coverage. The timing of 3G service rollouts is making this problem more relevant, as carriers realize that 3G services will have limited success without addressing the indoor coverage issue. The cost to address these shortcomings with traditional macro base station solutions is too high and not possible for most mobile operators. Microcells, picocells, and femtocells address these challenges in a much more cost-effective manner. By providing smaller and less powerful base stations in smaller areas, like public spaces, offices, and even homes, carriers can provide better coverage in more specific areas without a huge capital investment.

LOCAL SEARCH: Redefining Yellow Pages

Not so many years ago, major yellow pages publishers, both in the U.S. and in developed countries, reported revenue and associated earnings growth that were for the most part very consistent. The advent of commonly used online search, and imminently poised-for-growth local search -- developments that are less than a decade old and increasingly impacting -- are altering that historic consistency. The result is that yellow pages companies in the United States are witnessing an inflection point, with their margins from the printed yellow pages product beginning to shrink. The most important issue going forward is how the industry will cope with the need to maintain the strong profit margins that print has always provided, while at the same time adapting to the tsunami of electronic information delivery -- both online and mobile -- that consumers are increasingly relying upon, and that yellow pages clients are increasingly inclined to advertise in.

User-generated video (UGV), and the video sharing sites that exemplify this form of content, have spread across the globe. China is a prime example of UGV' s global reach and appeal, capturing a significant portion of the world market, making it second only to the US. But, despite the near universal appeal of video sharing sites, the market remains fluid and dynamic, constantly evolving and redefining itself. In light of the mergers and acquisitions, lawsuits, and a writers strike, it is clear that online video has made an indelible impact on the world of entertainment and the businesses that operate in this arena. In this report, In-Stat analyzes two US-based surveys fielded in January and March of 2008 to better understand the viewing habits of the end-user and his/her demands. In addition, the report includes a forecast for the regional breakup of viewed online videos and its top line revenue potential.

ROADMs are systems that allow the very flexible, remote selection of wavelengths transiting a given intermediate node on a fiber network for dropping and/or adding. They allow access to any of the wavelengths going through a node (or, in more limited ROADM implementations, access to a set of the transiting wavelengths) for use of the data on the chosen wavelength and the possibility of adding to, or modifying, the data on that wavelength for transmitting it on to the next node(s). They also allow the interconnection of multiple intersecting networks (multiple degree nodes) at the optical level, avoiding the expense and complexity of OEO conversions to achieve the interconnection. The device offers the promise of substantial savings in operations costs, and many operational benefits.

There is plenty of controversy about fundamental issues surrounding IMS. What, exactly, is the value proposition for service providers to adopt the architecture: Reducing Capex or Opex? Increasing revenue? Where does legacy infrastructure fit? Will standards ever mature? The report IMS Market Opportunities: From Standardization to Implementation examines these questions and many more. The report analyzes the current status of IMS, evaluating the enabling business and content delivery models. It discusses the timeline for standards development in light of both demand drivers and risk factors, and provides an adoption timeline, on which we base our estimate of the size of the IMS-based services market and forecast revenue for IMS equipment and software. The assumptions underlying all of our estimates are discussed in detail.

Despite the ‘Mexican Standoff' between the government and Telstra on the issue of a regulatory holiday for new broadband infrastructure, broadband penetration is proceeding at high speed in Australia. By mid-2007, there were close to 4.5 million subscribers. In the residential market this means a broadband penetration of close to 64% in Internet households (46% of total households). In the business market, this figure is over 80%. While the penetration of broadband in Australia is catching up with its trading partners, it is still lagging behind in the quality of broadband provided by the operators and in the price customers have to pay. The majority of customers are still on services that provide only 256Kb/s or 512Kb/s. Telstra does make an 8Mb/s service available, but this is not a guaranteed speed.

Telstra maintains its stranglehold on the wholesale market with revenues of just under $3 billion in 2007, which constituted just over 70% of the $4.2 billion wholesale market. The total 2nd tier market (including wholesale revenues) grew at around 8% in 2007 to $9.2 billion and we expect that the growth rate will drop slightly to around 6% in 2008 and then maintain this level moving into 2009. Growth is expected to subside over the next two years as Telstra is forced to begin a period of transformation and rationalisation that has already been evident in many European countries. Overall telecoms market growth is expected to drop to 4.1% by 2008 and 3.4% by 2009. Fibre networks will significantly increase the quality and capacity of the infrastructure. They will allow sectors such healthcare, education and energy to utilise these networks for the delivery of high quality home services, such as video nursing services to monitor elderly people and hospital patients who have been discharged early from hospital.

Internet user penetration in Central America and the Caribbean stands at roughly 18%, only just over a quarter of what it is in the USA and Canada. In South America, about 25% of the population uses the Internet. Challenges to Internet growth include poor fixed-line infrastructure, low PC penetration, and widespread poverty. On the positive side, the broadband market has been growing steadily in most countries, and there is considerable room for expansion. Although the situation varies considerably from country to country, the region as a whole is a fertile ground for broadband investment. WiMAX and triple play are becoming increasingly popular.

Mobile telephony in Latin America had a somewhat late start compared with the rest of the world, and only really took off in 1999-2000, when the major mobile markets in the region experienced an explosive growth. Prepaid services played an important role the sector' s success, as they made cell phones available to millions of low-income users. Mobile penetration in Latin America surpassed fixed-line penetration in 2001. By end-2005, cellular subscribers had overtaken their fixed-line counterparts in every Latin American country except Cuba. Paraguay leads the trend, with more than twelve mobile phones for every fixed line in service in early 2008.

2008 Latin America - Telecoms and Fixed-line Statistics (tables only)

Most telecom markets in Latin America have been both privatised and liberalised. Privatisation, however, has met with considerable opposition in a number of countries. While private investment has contributed to rapid growth in the non-basic services, such as mobile and long distance telephony, fixed lines have virtually ceased to grow, despite a low 18% teledensity. Countries with poor infrastructure have leapfrogged into new applications such as VoIP and WiMAX. However, telecom laws lag behind technological advances, leaving numerous grey areas that have resulted in acrimonious legal battles among companies, regulators, and governments. In Latin America, telecom infrastructure varies from nonexistent to rudimentary, and from adequate to well advanced. Despite a low 18% teledensity (USA' s teledensity is almost 60%), fixed-line growth has stagnated since 2001 even in the major markets. This basic telephony stagnation is coupled with a general shift from fixed-line to mobile phones. On a positive note, there is a growing demand for high-speed data services, and fixed-line operators are looking to ADSL services to increase their revenue potential. A number of fixed-line companies have also introduced prepaid voice services in order to reduce payment defaults.

SOA benefits relate to achieving reuse of code and flexible response to changing market conditions. Extending the benefits of SOA beyond the enterprise relates to providing the ability to exchange data between partners, suppliers, distributors, and customers. SOA facilitates integration beyond the enterprise - between a company and its partners and customers. A business-to-business (B2B) infrastructure based on a SOA approach lowers development costs. It delivers value chain economies and reduces project risks. The markets for Web 2.0 servers show stead growth due to the increased need for social networking, intelligent presentation of data, and video sharing. Web 2.0 promises to support collaboration on a personal and enterprise level. This provides an advantage to IBM with its new product cycle and its highly evolved collaborative software initiatives. Web 2.0 server markets forecasts relate to the development of advertising on-line and collaboration tools. Markets at $2.4 billion in 2007 are expected to be at $6.1 billion2014.
