Abstract
Generating Capacity Statistics
Introduction
This statistical package of databases is compiled to provide information about
three aspects of the power generation industry: the size, history and
development of generation capacity in every country, its composition by energy
source, and analysis of the power plants which deliver it, both present and
planned. The statistics in the database package are contained in six sets of
spreadsheets.
- generating capacity (MW), historical and forecast
- present and future new capacity (MW), capacity reaching 40 years of age
- analysis of capacity (MW) by fuel source, historical and forecast
- electricity generation (GWh), historical
- existing power plants, 2006
- new generation projects in the pipeline, 2006
The databases have been combined into 3 packages, addressing three aspects of
the generation industry. They can be purchased all together in one combination
package, or as separate packages.
The data in these databases is constantly changing. Not only is new data added
regularly but figures are sometimes changed retrospectively. ABS has
maintained the databases with regular up-dates since its inception in 1991.
All databases cover each of 184 countries separately.
The 3 Packages
1. Power generating capacity
PP5 -Power Predictor Report & Database package, is in its 5th edition. It is
designed to provide a comprehensive quantitative outline of power generating
capacity and its expansion with new projects. The package consists of a report
which contains analysis with extensive descriptive graphics and a series of
Excel files which contain four sets of data.
1. Historical generating capacity (MW) from 1970-2005, and forecasts from
2005-2020
2. Historical generating capacity (MW) from 1950-2005 for selected countries
3. Forecasts of new additions and 40 year old plant (MW) due for
decommissioning
4. New Generation Projects Global Database planned or under construction,
1,940 projects listed with capacity (MW), fuel and status of completion (This
database can be purchased separately, see paragraph 7 below)
A fifth set of data will be introduced with PP6 in early 2007
5. Historical generation (GWh) from 1950-2003
Also contained are 30 tables and 149 charts of historical generating capacity
in all major countries. Price: £2,250
2. Composition of generating capacity by energy source
Fuel Forecasts is a database which provides analysis of power generation
capacity by energy source, historically from 1991 and forecast to 2010.
6. Historical generating capacity is shown annually by fuel source (coal, oil,
gas, hydro, nuclear, wind, biomass, geothermal, solar thermal, solar PV,
ocean) from 1991-2005, and forecasts from 2005-2010. This database has been
up-dated in April 2006 and consequently is slightly different from PP5.
Price: £1,090 including *1, 2 above
3. Power plants
Two databases provide an inventory of the world's power generating plants,
present and planned. The list of current plants accounts for 94% of global
capacity. One is contained in Power Predictor above, or both can be bought
separately.
7. New Generation Projects Global Database planned or under construction,
1,940 projects listed with capacity (MW), fuel and status of completion.
Price: £1,025 *if purchased separately, but also included in Power Predictor,
see paragraph 4 above
8. Global Database of Operational Power Generation Plants , 16,140 power
plants listed Price: £3,950
4. Generating Capacity Statistics, Total combined package
You can purchase the full ABS Generating Capacity Statistics package which
contains all of the information contained in the 8 databases. Price: £6,000*
if purchased individually £8,315
Key Findings
- The installed generating capacity of the world is now over 4,000 GW. It
grew at a CAGR of 4.7% in the early 1980s and has slowed down to 2.5% today.
- Such is the size of the installed base today that growth in capacity now
exceeds 100 GW a year.
- There was massive growth in the twenty year period from 1960 and most of
this plant is now 40 years old. Although the volume of plant reaching the end
of its design life and due for replacement is increasing, the increased use of
sophisticated techniques of asset management has slowed down the replacement
market.
- The database list over 16,100 power plants in the world and nearly 2,000
projects under construction or planned. The existing power plants constitute
nearly 95% of global capacity.
Reasons to Buy
- We believe that these databases, which have been assembled over a period
of 15 years, constitute one of the most comprehensive banks of data about the
global electricity generating industry available today.
- This information bank provides immediate and easy access to a wealth of
information for planning, analysis, reports and presentations concerning the
electrical generating industry.
