Abstract
Coal-fired power is the primary means for electricity generation worldwide. As
a result, the market for coal-fired power generation equipment and services is
very large, much larger in fact than the other generation markets, i.e. hydro,
nuclear and renewable. Further, coal-fired power still will be the largest
generation market in 2018, despite all the excitement about renewables.
Coal-fired power is of interest both because it' s so big a market, but also
because the development of new, "clean coal" technologies potentially holds
the key to addressing the problem of global warming in a significant way.
The report examines coal-fired power technology, the global market for
coal-fired generation equipment and engineering, procurement, construction
(EPC) services, utility "clean coal" activities and coal-fired equipment and
EPC services providers. The emissions problems associated with coal-fired
power are discussed, especially carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The technology
of CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) is presented, along with the market
potential of CCS as it moves into the commercialization phase. The coal-fired
generation market, along with the markets for thermal, nuclear, hydro and
renewable generation are sized both in MW and US dollars, by region, during
the 2008-2018 period. Global utility capex, along with CCS efforts, especially
those of E.ON and RWE, are discussed. Profiles of leading global suppliers of
generation equipment, as well as EPC services, are given, along with estimated
market shares and financial comparisons.
