INTRODUCTION
STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
This report presents the findings of a survey of the U.S. market for paint additives. This market has been growing because there is a need to solve problems created by a reduction in the use of solvents, as mandated by increasingly restrictive government regulations. The report will bring to its readers a detailed analysis of the market for paint additives, with emphasis on future trends, changing technology and opportunities.
Major objectives are as follows:
- To make available the most current and reliable information on the paint additives market.
- To forecast the market for these additives, broken down, insofar as possible, by product, formulation type and coating type.
- To describe major trends in principal end uses.
- To provide descriptions of the most important suppliers in the business.
REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
Increasingly restrictive legislation covering emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has brought about a sharp reduction in the use of solvents and an increase in the use of waterborne formulations. Water creates problems such as freezing, foaming, and difficulty in applying and curing the finish. Additives are helping solve these problems.
CONTRIBUTION OF THE STUDY
This study will be useful to companies seeking guidance in the field of additives, such as manufacturers of raw materials. It also will be helpful to companies contemplating entry into the field, either with new products or by acquisition.
SCOPE
This report covers the more important paint additives (thickeners, biocides, corrosion inhibitors, foam control agents, surfactants, plasticizers, driers and adhesion promoters) in detail, and other additives as a group. It does not include other raw materials used in paints, such as solvents or pigments. Photoinitiators also are not covered, as we consider them to be essential raw materials, not additives. The report is limited to activities in the United States.
