INTRODUCTION
STUDY OBJECTIVES
BCC's goal in conducting this study was to provide an overview to the media, sera and reagents used in the cell culture. This market is rising at a
good pace. Another goal was to study the present and future scenario of the media, sera and reagents of cell culture. The study was also conducted to
see the market size, market leaders and factors affecting the use of media, sera and reagents of cell culture.
The basic principles underlying what
are media and sera, their composition, and the use of reagents in cell culture is also discussed with their sales over a five-year period from 2003 to
2008. The companies selling these products were brought to the forefront and also the factors affecting markets for these products, and how those
markets are likely to change.
Our key objective was to present a comprehensive analysis of the current display market and its future direction in
media, sera and reagents of cell culture, with the emphasis on newer products.
REASONS FOR DOING THIS STUDY
The media and sera market is changing due to the introduction of serum free medium/protein free medium. The R&D spending, along with increasing
competition, new products, the international marketplace and a changing customer base (due to the use of serum free media) are contributing to
creating a new kind of market in this field. This study looks at almost all the factors, which are governing the market of media, sera and reagents
used in cell culture. The use of serum extenders, serum alternatives and especially the use of serum free and protein free media have enhanced the
changes brought in the market. The total market may reach a billion-dollar figure by 2008.
The growth by acquisition strategies and the
collaborations by companies to increase the sales and get better and newer products are also covered in this report. One example of this is Invitrogen,
they acquired five companies after going public in 1999. These companies are Research Genetics, Ethrog Biotechnologies, Nucleic Acid Purification,
Life Technologies (supplier of novel gene identification products, complimentary gene cloning, and expression products cell culture reagents and
services), and NOVEX.
This study discusses the strength and weaknesses of the market in light of the new products, growing competition and changing
customer needs.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STUDY
The study contributes to the areas of growth and decline. The study also looks from the point of view of manufacturers and the users. We present
the types of media, sera and reagents used in cell culture. The regulations governing their use, technological descriptions and issues, applications,
market factors and potential, and the projected market for 2003 and 2008 are also studied. This study will be of interest to the pharmaceutical
industry, and biotechnological companies. The research, production and contract segments in the biotech and pharmaceutical companies have been dealt
with in detail.
It also contributes by bringing together in one place much of the information on new products in this area. This study is probably a
source for many of the estimates about use of media, sera and reagents used in biotechnology.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study encompasses the major types of media, sera and reagents of cell culture used in the biotech industry. BCC analyzes these
products, and gives a look at the manufacturers, new products, sales estimates, market projections and some market share information. The
technological issues and the latest trends and developments are discussed. We have also discussed some of the latest products used in serum free
medium etc. BCC analyzes the industry on a worldwide basis. We examined the regulations given by the government and the FDA.
METHODOLOGY
A comprehensive literature and patent search was conducted. The literature included technical newsletters and journals, as well as many other
sources. The data was collected through interviews/mails of various pharmaceutical and biotech companies. This data was complied and the projections
were based on such estimates as the current number of end users, potential end users, likely unit prices, rates of consumption and the market trends.
INFORMATION SOURCES
BCC surveyed many companies to obtain data for this study. Included were the manufacturers and the end users of the drug delivery systems. We
gathered the data from these industries, also spoke with officials of these industries, consulted newsletters, company literature, product literature,
a host of technical articles, journals, indexes, and abstracts. Exhaustive investigations of databases by key terminology were done. In addition, we
compiled data from current financial and trade information and government sources.
