Abstract
In-Stat completed a survey in February 2006 with broadband users to determine
interest levels, and current use of, various digital home client devices and
home networking applications. Although media networking is growing, many
owners of Media Center PCs, or PCs with TV tuners, are still not using them
for recording TV broadcasts. Analysis shows that many of these owners are not
recording on those devices because they also own a Personal Video Recorder or
Digital Video Recorder. As users become more familiar with media center
functions, the percentage of those recording with them should grow; however,
this growth may be limited if these owners continue to also add PVRs/DVRs to
their digital homes. It remains to be seen how many consumers who own both, PC
with TV tuner and PVR/DVR, will record regularly with both devices. We gauged
ownership, familiarity, use, and interest in many areas, with comparisons
between broadband users with and without a home network, and those planning to
install one, such as: Digital Entertainment Devices Used, PC Ownership & PC
Backup Behavior, Buying Channels, Broadband Sharing Only vs. Multi-Use Home
Networks, Network Equipment & Client Devices, Interest CE Devices with WLAN
Connection, Home Network Management & Setup Software, Home Network Support
Services, Audio & Video Media Use with Home Network & Usage Habits with Media
Center PCs & PCs with TV Tuners.
