The 202-page Eighth Edition update to "Global Communications Power: Market Forecasts, Economic Trends and Competitive Environment," is the industrys leading analysis of this critical marketplace. This detailed analysis focuses on the diverse factors that are driving the continuing recovery in this global industry.

Expanded coverage in the Eighth Edition includes an analysis of the growing demand for Engineering and Installation (E&I) services. This is the second "step function change" in demand for E&I services. It is expected to have a significant impact on the competitive environment in the Global Communications Power industry. Expanded analysis includes E&I forecasts by region. At the same time, there is growing demand for Emerging Energy Storage technologies that are beginning to replace traditional VRLA and Flooded batteries. The Eighth Edition contains a detailed discussion of NiCd, NiMH, Lithium, Fuel Cells, Microturbines and Flywheels that are all finding use in Communications Power.

The telecommunications infrastructure industry is still in flux. After enduring several years of declining sales, equipment vendors have sought new markets and new business models to maintain and increase sales of power systems. Early strategies included focusing on replacement sales (for batteries, in particular) instead of new installations. Wireless applications provided the best opportunities for new equipment sales. More recently, companies are providing differentiated "bundled services," which are still expected to drive the telecom sector in 2005.

This in-depth analysis provides detailed dollar, unit and pricing forecasts of the anticipated market growth across regions and equipment segments. The all new forecasts and business analysis contained in this update include: Over 40 forecasts broken out by Power System Size (Micro, Small, Medium, Large, CO-Class) and Applications (Wireline, Wireless, CATV). Power System forecasts are further broken down by Rectifiers, Batteries and Other system elements. Detailed graphs illustrate year-to-year growth rates (recovery trajectories); and regional growth rates (Asia, Europe, Central and Latin America, China, North America, and ROW).

Definition

The fundamental purpose of this study is to provide the information and analysis necessary to make strategic decisions about the sales potential and future demand characteristics for the communications power system market. Communications power systems, as discussed in this report, include a variety of equipment: rectifiers, batteries and other related power components, such as ac distribution, dc-dc converters, inverters, monitoring modules and dc distribution. Installation services and engineering services are defined relative to the power system portion of the installation and engineering. For installation, this would include assembling and testing the system. Engineering services includes analyzing power needs and network protection. E&I does not include CATV services. In addition to dc power systems, 60/90Vac power supply systems consisting of uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) and batteries used in CATV networks are also included. This study is designed to help companies improve their current market understanding, as well as anticipate and plan for future trends. In addition to determining the potential market size and growth, this report also profiles the key competitors in the communications power supply market.

Scope

This report encompasses the following areas:

(1) Estimates for the potential worldwide market for communications dc power systems in units, dollars and pricing from 2005 to 2010, broken down by application and power system. Estimates for the potential worldwide market for CATV 60/90Vac power supply systems in units, dollars and pricing. Geographical regions include Worldwide sales trends, along with trends for six regional segments: North America, Europe, Asia, Central and Latin America (CALA), China, and Rest of World (ROW).

(2) Market forecasts are given for the following application segments: Wireline, Wireless, and CATV. Power system forecasts include: Micro Power System (up to 75 amps), Small Power System (76-200 amps), Medium Power System (201-1,200 amps), Large Power System (1,201-2,400 amps), and CO-Class Power System (>2,400 amps). Each of these systems is further broken out by Rectifiers, Batteries and "Other." Other includes related power components, such as ac distribution, dc-dc converters, inverters, monitoring modules and dc distribution. Separate forecasts are done for 60/90Vac power supply systems used in CATV outdoor plants or cabinets.

(3) Estimates for the potential worldwide market for Engineering Services and Installation Services in dollars from 2005 to 2010. Geographical regions include Worldwide revenue, along with trends for six regional segments: North America, Europe, Asia, Central and Latin America (CALA), China, and Rest of World (ROW).

(4) Discussion of economic trends, business conditions and market drivers for the communications power system market, including market characteristics and growth opportunities, power system market segmentation, changing business models, and potential threats to existing communications power supply technologies.

(5) Provides a detailed competitive analysis, including market share, competitor profiles, and recent developments in the industry.

Methodology

Primary and secondary research was conducted of both makers and end-users of communications power systems and subsystems. In addition, communications power system integrators and equipment makers were polled to help determine industry trends and growth rates. The research was in no way limited to companies in North America, with the implicit understanding that a significant portion of the systems produced by the major OEMs are shipped outside of their region.

The detailed methodology proceeded as follows:

(1) A series of telephone, fax and e-mail interviews were conducted by Darnell Group with a select group of vendors and power system users/specifiers. During interviews, a checklist was used to make sure that no points were overlooked. The primary research efforts were directed to major users of the various types of communications power systems. The use of multiple primary data sources (e.g., end-equipment makers and communications power suppliers) enabled cross-validation and ensured the highest possible database quality and reliability.

(2) To develop and confirm the engineering and installation service forecasts, two surveys were prepared and sent to 60 companies who offer telecommunications equipment installation and engineering services. One survey was sent to "dedicated" installation and engineering services companies (i.e. companies who focus solely on this service); while the second survey was sent to companies who also sell equipment or offer other services. The surveys were brief and sent to each survey participant via email and fax. From this group, 14 surveys were returned representing both initial groups. These were followed up with a series of phone interviews. During interviews, a checklist was used to make sure that no points were overlooked. The use of additional multiple primary data sources (e.g., end-equipment makers and communications power suppliers) enabled cross-validation and ensured the highest possible database quality and reliability. The responses provided were deemed to be complete and believed to be accurate, partly based on the high percentage of respondents providing consistent data. Also, there were many primary sources consulted for specific information outside of the questionnaire participants. The information collected from these additional respondents was integrated into several sections of the report.

(3) The primary data collected in the survey was supplemented by secondary data gathered from a variety of published sources including previous industry studies, trade journals, proceedings from related trade conferences, annual reports, 10ks, product literature, advertising, industry web pages, newspapers and periodicals, previous reports, related work performed by the Darnell group and a variety of other sources.
