Abstract
The single greatest event in IPTV was the November 2006 decision by the Cable
TV operators to take the threat of interactive television seriously. In North
America, where most of the pay-TV revenue is generated, the pressure from
Verizon' s FTTH rollout could no longer be ignored. CableLabs is finishing up
DOCSIS3.0 standard which provides for both channel bonding for greater
bandwidth and the multicast of TV channels rather than the current broadcast.
Interactive TV and the use of video in social networks, such as YouTube, is
driving the delivery of TV services over open networks like the Internet. This
“ Internet Television” is one way that satellite TV providers can
supply interactive TV services like “ time-shift” TV. In addition
content providers are looking to offer lightly viewed and specialized content
through the Internet. In a year it is obvious that IPTV has moved beyond a
means of Telcos to retard the decline in fixed line subscribers and has become
the accepted means of delivering Tv and video services for the future.
The incremental increase in the network equipment market due to IPTV will
become significant by 2010. It will increase a market, which today is about
$15 B, by 15%.
