Abstract

Overview

Introduction

Turkey is Europe's most credit card orientated consumer credit market. The Turkish consumer credit market has seen significant growth in the last five years and this report details this growth and the reasons. Market forecasts, competitor market shares and key regulatory and competitor developments are covered, resulting in a comprehensive report covering this unique market.

Scope

  • Covers the consumer credit market (not including any loans secured on property)
  • Provides market sizing data in terms of gross advances and balances outstanding
  • Provides competitor market share for the top five players in terms of balances outstanding; a short profile of the top players is also provided
  • Provides competitor market share for the top five credit card lenders in terms of balances outstanding

Report Highlights

The consumer credit market has risen rapidly in Turkey primarily due to the recovery of the Turkish economy. The recovery of the economy has in turn increased consumer confidence and increased spending on consumables. Furthermore, inflation has been falling, which has in turn led to lower interest rates thus making borrowing cheaper.

Credit cards are popular in Turkey among both issuing banks and consumers. High inflation has limited banks' consumer credit portfolios making long-term credit much less common than elsewhere in Europe. This has resulted in an innovative range of rewards and incentives in the credit card market.

Amid the flurry of strategic partnerships being formed recently in Turkey there has been little sign of domestic led consolidation. This is because the domestic market is self-sufficient in terms of capital funding for the current and expected rise in consumer credit, which makes mergers unnecessary for a bank's future development.
