Abstract

Overview

Introduction

Verdict Research: Menswear accounts for approximately a quarter of all UK clothing spend and with profiles of operators generating nearly 50% share of this important market, Verdict' s UK Menswear Retailers report provides comprehensive coverage of the sector as well as detailed data and analysis of the issues, trends and dynamics in the market.

Scope

  • Ten year' s data on consumer spending trends in UK clothing - men' s, women' s and children' s as well as accessories, placing menswear in context.
  • Analysis of the shifting dynamics in distribution channels highlighting the challenges for specialists and individual operators.
  • Market shares of the key operators over five years, plus trading records, operating margins, sales densities and store portfolio analysis.
  • Profiles on Burton and TopMan, Debenhams, George, River Island, Moss Bros, Marks & Spencer, Matalan, Next, JJB, and new this year, Primark and TK Maxx.

Report Highlights

Menswear will enjoy its best year of growth since 1997 though, at 3.3% it is still underperforming womenswear. Younger men, a growing demographic, have become more interested in fashion; there are more opportunities to buy menswear as supermarkets and clothing specialists expand their clothing offers and price deflation is lessening.

Grocers have increased their share of the menswear market to 7.6% this year. As a result of their growth, clothing specialists will see their share of the menswear market fall back for the first time in over five years.

Menswear is losing out to competing spending categories. While menswear spend has increased 12.7% over the past five years, alcohol & tobacco spending is up 16.8%, recreation & culture 19.7%, and communications (including mobile phones and the Internet) up 28.7%.

Reasons to Purchase

  • Make informed strategic decisions in market context with ten year' s data on consumer spending trends in all four segments of the clothing market.
  • Benchmark performance across the sector on key metrics including unique market share data, comparable sales densities and operating margins.
  • Understand the main issues and develop market driven strategies with analysis of market trends, operators' development plans and Verdict' s outlook.
