Abstract
This Energy Insights report covers the policy, economic, and technology
developments that are driving the acquisition of renewable energy by U.S.
utilities. Ten case studies evaluate utility approaches to obtaining green
energy resources and reveal the regulatory, financial, and context-specific
factors affecting the decision-making process. The report provides insight into
how various utilities, including vertically integrated investor-owned utilities
and public power companies, are selecting among renewable technology options
and financial arrangements such as power purchase agreements and utility
ownership.
"A variety of factors - most notably federal and state-level incentives, energy
portfolio mandates, improving economics, and potential carbon caps - are
spurring utility renewable energy acquisition," says Nadav Enbar, research
analyst, Energy Insights. "In fact, a growing number of power providers are
opting to own renewable energy facilities to reap greater financial benefit."
