Abstract
This Energy Insights report reviews the current drivers in smart metering for
the meter-to-cash process within an energy provider and the drivers and
benefits that affect energy consumers. The report also examines the changing
technology and what utilities can do with that changing technology. We present
essential guidance for utilities that have not yet made a smart metering
decision but are embarking on that path, for utilities that have started
deployments of smart metering hardware but continue to face implementations of
their changed processes and pricing and billing models, and for vendors that
offer products and services in smart metering.
Smart metering deployments continue to grow worldwide, with new deployments
most often led by regulatory change, but more deployments are now led by solid
business bases and decisions on long-term investments. Karen Blackmore, program
director for Retail Strategies at Energy Insights says, "Utilities can
encourage energy efficiency while still meeting the needs of their
stakeholders. The two goals are mutual, not mutually exclusive."
