Abstract
This Energy Insights report describes the regulatory environment for criteria
emissions and distributed energy (DE) at the national, state, and local levels.
It provides a detailed look at the regulatory schemes in several selected
states, including regulations that will be implemented, or are proposed for
implementation, in the near future. It then describes some of the more advanced
emissions technologies and how successful they might be in complying with the
more stringent regulations.
"New technologies are enabling DE equipment to comply with some of the stricter
emissions standards, but if a project is already only marginally economical,
the cost of emissions controls can push it out of the envelope of viability,"
said Mike Casey, senior research analyst, Energy Insights. "Manufacturers will
have to develop innovative, less expensive means of reducing emissions to allow
the use of combustion-based DE in areas where emissions are most restricted."
