Abstract
This Energy Insights report summarizes key findings from the 2007 Energy
Insights National Residential Online Panel In-Home Display Survey. Although the
use of in-home energy display devices is still limited, utilities are
increasingly interested in the potential of these devices to affect customers'
energy use behavior. This report analyzes consumer interest in in-home display
units and provides insight into the types of information consumers find most
valuable. It also analyzes the role this type of information plays in promoting
energy conservation and utility program participation.
"We consider in-home displays to be a ready technology that utilities can take
advantage of to educate customers about their energy use and maximize
participation rates for energy conservation and dynamic pricing programs," says
Barb Ryan, research manager, Energy Insights. "Over half of our survey
respondents indicated that availability of an in-home display that also allowed
them to automate control of major energy-consuming devices would make them more
likely to participate in dynamic pricing programs."
