Abstract
This Energy Insights report looks at the reasons why utilities choose to work
with demand response (DR) aggregators. Based on discussions with the two
largest DR aggregators and four utilities, the report details the services that
aggregators provide, the value they bring to both utilities and commercial and
industrial customers, and how aggregators are able to involve a broader
spectrum of customers in DR.
"For some utilities, it may require a leap of faith to trust a third party with
the customer relationship," said Barb Ryan, Energy Insights research manager.
"However, for utilities looking to expand the participation in DR programs of
small and midmarket businesses, chain accounts, and institutional customers,
working with an aggregator to outsource DR may be a means to overcome obstacles
and involve this often hard-to-reach sector."
