Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Terumo Corporation is a global medical
technology company that manufactures and sells a wide range of medical
products and equipment. The company' s products are sold in over 150 countries,
supported by a worldwide network of branches and offices. Terumo has
production facilities in Japan, the US, the UK, Belgium, Mexico, China, India
and the Philippines.
In fiscal 2005, ended 31st March 2005, Terumo reported its eleventh
consecutive year of sales growth, with revenues up by 6.9% to a record ¥233
billion (US$2.15 billion). The company also achieved record net income of
¥27.1 billion (US$253.6 million).
The company' s business is classified into the following segments:
General Hospital Products, including blood transfusion systems,
disposable medical equipment (such as needles and syringes), and
pharmaceuticals, including nutrition and IV solutions, and pre-filled
syringes. Terumo' s largest business, it accounted for 54% of total sales in
fiscal 2005.
Cardiac and Vascular Products, including catheter systems,
cardiovascular products and vascular grafts. This segment accounted for 35% of
Terumo' s 2005 sales. It includes the operations of Terumo' s Vascutek vascular
graft business, based in the UK, and two US companies, Terumo Cardiovascular
Systems and Terumo Heart. The latter was established in January 2003 in order
to focus on the DuraHeart left ventricular assist system. The European launch
of DuraHeart is planned for 2006.
Home Healthcare Products, including peritoneal dialysis systems,
diabetes care products, blood pressure monitoring devices and other home use
products such as oxygen systems, nutritional products, thermometers and
sphygmomanometers. These products, sold mainly in Japan and other parts of
Asia, and accounted for 11% of Terumo' s sales in fiscal 2005.
