Abstract
Headquartered in the Netherlands, Akzo Nobel currently operates three business
groups: Coatings, Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals. However, in February 2006,
Akzo announced its intention to spin off the pharmaceuticals business under
the name Organon Biosciences. The remaining businesses will be combined as
Coatings/Chemicals.This report provides a full review of the company' s
activities together with sales forecasts for key products to 2010.
Current Growth Drivers
Organon' s current growth drivers are the fertility drug, Puregon and the
contraceptive, NuvaRing, both of which helped to return the division to growth
in 2005. In addition, Organon signed a contract with the US Agency for
International Development to supply three million vials of Megestron during
2006, to support family health programmes in developing nations.
Key Late-Stage Products
Organon is working with Pfizer on the development of asenapine for the
treatment of schizophrenia and acute mania in bipolar disorder. First filings
are expected in early 2007, although the filing for schizophrenia may be
delayed following disappointing trial results.
Sugammadex is a new reversal agent for use in general anaesthsia. It is in
Phase III trials with first filings expected in the first half of 2007.
Corrifollitropin alpha is in Phase III trials for infertility, with first
filing anticipated in 2008.
Org 50081 is in Phase III trials for hot flashes and Phase II trials for
insomnia.
