Carl Zeiss Meditec AG (CZM) is a leading provider of systems for diagnosing
and treating the four main diseases of the eye: vision defects (refraction),
cataracts, glaucoma and retinal disorders. These products include slit lamps
and fundus cameras, the Humphrey Field Analyzer for glaucoma detection and
management, refractive lasers and optical coherence tomography devices.
In 2005, a range of intraocular lenses (IOLs) and consumables were added to
the company' s product line through the acquisition of Ioltech. The company has
also recently expanded its portfolio further with the acquisition of Carl
Zeiss Surgical from Carl Zeiss. Carl Zeiss Surgical is the world' s leading
provider of surgical microscopes and adds visualisation solutions for
ophthalmic, neuro and ENT surgery to the CZM line.
CZM is based in Jena, Germany, with subsidiaries in Pirmasens, Germany, the
US, Japan and France. Carl Zeiss, a leading manufacturer of optical and
opto-electronics technology, owns 65% of CZM and the remaining 35% of shares
are in free float.
Carl Zeiss Surgical GmbH is based in Oberkochen, Germany, and offers surgical
microscopes for all disciplines of microsurgery, as well as visualisation and
documentation systems. It claims to have enjoyed market leadership in its
field for over 50 years, with two out of every three microsurgeons worldwide
using the company' s surgical microscopes.
