INTRODUCTION
This study analyzes the US pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape industry.
Products covered include single- and double-sided tapes with plastic film,
paper, cloth, rubber and other backings (e.g., plastic foam, glass cloth, foil
and nonwoven materials), as well as unbacked adhesive transfer tapes. Trends in
raw material use are also presented. Excluded from the scope of the study are
tapes where the adhesives must be activated by water, solvent or heat (e.g.,
gummed and heat-activated); related pressure sensitive items such as adhesive
bandages, transdermal patches and protective films; and pressure sensitive
labels.
Historical data for 1993, 1998 and 2003, and forecasts to the years 2008 and
2013 are provided for aggregate pressure sensitive tape shipments in both
current dollars (including inflation) and square meters. Historical data and
forecasts for tape shipments by primary backing material and construction type
(i.e., single- and double-sided) and tape sales by product and market are
presented in current dollars. Data on raw material use in pressure sensitive
tapes are given in pounds.
