Abstract

New product development to benefit US demand for flat glass products

Demand for advanced flat glass will benefit primarily from the development and commercialization of a wide variety of innovative new products. These products, such as smart glass, self cleaning glass and heads-up display windscreens, are all in the early stages of the product life cycle. Nevertheless, US demand for advanced flat glass reached nearly $6 billion in 2005, and is growing at a very rapid pace.

Architectural markets to exhibit strongest growth

Motor vehicles represent the largest individual market for advanced flat glass, incorporating a wide variety of products, including tempered and laminated window glass, heads-up display windscreens, electrochromic mirrors, smart glass and self-cleaning glass. Although less than half the size of the motor vehicle market, the architectural market will post much stronger gains, benefitting from the development of self-cleaning and smart glass products, as well as growing use of laminated hurricane glass in certain parts of the country.
