Abstract
US demand to rise 6.1% annually through 2010
Demand for sterile medical packaging in the US is projected to rise 6.1
percent annually to $4.0 billion in 2010. Pharmaceutical and biological
applications will lead growth as advances in biotechnology and related life
sciences contribute new injectable and inhalation therapies for cancer, heart
disorders and other major diseases. This trend will especially boost demand
for functional containers, such as prefillable inhalers and prefillable
syringes, which provide for more precise drug administration and enhanced
infection prevention. The impact of new and existing biotechnology therapies,
along with the widening use of parenteral nutrition in the treatment of
critical care patients, will expand the total market for sterile
pharmaceutical and biological packaging 7.6 percent annually to $2.4 billion
in 2010.
Sterile thermoformed trays to grow the fastest
Sterile medical trays and pouches are forecast to post combined demand of more
than $1 billion in 2010. The market for sterile thermoformed trays will gain
upward momentum from advances in plastic and foil materials, which will
broaden potential medical product applications. Multiple compartment trays
that package all or most products required for specific patient procedures,
such as dialysis, dental restoration, immunoassay diagnostics and surgery,
will provide the best growth opportunities based on infection prevention,
labor saving and ease of storage advantages. These configurations also
contribute to improved efficiencies in hospitals, outpatient facilities, and
medical and dental practices, by eliminating the need to collect and organize
products prior to patient procedures.
