Abstract
Global demand to exceed $110 billion in 2010
Demand for material handling products worldwide is projected to expand over
four percent per year through 2010 to more than $110 billion, an acceleration
from the pace of the 2000-2005 period. The US, Japan and Germany are the
world's largest producers of material handling products. Germany and Japan are
major net exporters, although China is expected to become an increasingly
important global supplier.
China, other Asia/Pacific and Eastern Europe nations offer best growth prospects
Developing parts of the world will provide suppliers with some of the best
sales opportunities going forward. Industrialization- related fixed investment
activity, rising per capita incomes and growth in manufacturing output will
all contribute to gains in equipment demand in these areas, most notably in
the Asia/Pacific and Eastern Europe regions. China will record the largest
growth of any national market in dollar terms. Sales conditions are also
expected to be strong in India, Russia, Mexico and South Korea, as well as in
lower-volume markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Turkey.
Material handling demand in the US and Japan will show renewed strength
following a period of relatively sluggish gains, and market advances in
Western Europe will also accelerate through 2010. Increases will be fueled by
generally favorable economic conditions and higher income levels, leading to a
rise in goods consumption and manufacturing production, boosting material
handling sales as fixed investment activity climbs.
Advanced products to post more rapid gains than conventional products
Advanced/automated material handling products such as robots and automated
guided vehicles (AGVs) will post the best gains, as will software and high-end
services like systems design and project management. These types of products
and services can enhance the productivity of the material handling function,
and are amenable to integration into larger-scale factory automation and
automated warehouse- type environments. Conventional material handling product
demand -- such as industrial trucks and lifts, conveyors, hoists, cranes and
the like -- will also improve. Developing countries that are exhibiting rapid
industrialization will register healthy demand for most types of material
handling equipment and systems, both conventional and advanced.
