Outlook
Growth in US demand for industrial water management chemicals will reflect a
generally healthy manufacturing economy coupled with rising environmental
standards. Lower pollution tolerance and stricter enforcement of existing
regulations have propagated a trend toward more industrial water recycling, and
thus a greater need for chemical treatment.
Products
Increased water recycling will disproportionately favor certain products
such as corrosion inhibitors, coagulants and flocculants, oxidizers and
biocides, and chelating agents. Corrosion inhibitors will continue to be the
value leader, with over one-third of total sales in 2004. Oxidizers and biocides
will exhibit the fastest growth, as water managers replace low priced
commodities such as chlorine with more environmentally suitable alternatives
such as bromine derivatives and hydrogen peroxide.
Applications
Cooling water will continue to be the largest application for industrial
water management chemicals in 2004. Cooling water treatment employs all major
types of chemicals, although treatment is generally less intensive than in other
applications.
other Process water treatment chemicals will experience the fastest growth,
advancing 5.9 percent annually though 2004. Water quality standards are high for
this application, because process water comes into direct contact with
manufactured products. In addition to environmental standards, the increasing
utilization of high-purity water in delicate processing applications such as
microelectronics and pharmaceutical manufacturing will drive demand.
Markets
Pulp and paper manufacturing will continue to be the largest market for
industrial water management chemicals through 2004, while food and beverage
processing will be the fastest growing. Both of these are water intensive
industries that will be affected by stricter environmental legislation, but food
and beverage manufacturers are additionally very sensitive to consumer demand
for pure ingredients, of which water is an important one.
