Abstract
US asphalt demand to reach 38.5 million tons by 2011
Demand for asphalt in the United States is projected to increase 2.3 percent
annually from 2006 to 38.5 million tons in 2011. This represents a
considerable improvement over the performance posted in the 2001- 2006 period,
when a drop-off in road construction negatively impacted demand for paving
products, the dominant end use for asphalt.
Demand for asphalt will also benefit from the increasing use of new paving
technologies, such as in-place recycling, microsurfacing and chip seal
technologies. Asphalt cement will remain the dominant asphalt paving product.
Continuing adoption of performance-based specifications for road projects will
generate demand for polymermodified asphalts.
