Overview
US demand for paint and coating materials is forecast to rise 2.7 percent per
year to just under eleven billion pounds in 2004, with a market value of $9.2
billion, greatly out-pacing gains in paint and coating shipments.
Gains in both volume and value demand for paint and coating materials will
continue to benefit from a greater use of environmentally-compliant
formulations, such as water-based, high-solids, powder and
radiation-cured.
The majority of these environmentally-compliant formulations require higher
loadings of resins, pigments, fillers and additives and modifiers than
traditional solvent-based formulations.
In general, more of these materials are needed in environmentally-compliant
formulations to compensate for the reduced solvent content, as well as the
increasingly rigorous performance characteristics re-quired by end-users of
paint and coatings.
Markets
The architectural market is the largest out-let for paint and coating materials,
account-1999.
The large amount of waterborne formula-tions used within architectural settings
will continue to promote demand for paint and coating materials through 2004.
Reformu-lation to water-based paints is well estab-lished in the architectural
market, however, thus limiting growth in paint and coating
material demand.
On the other hand, the move toward alternative coating types in the durable
equipment and specialty and maintenance markets will stimulate demand for
various materials, such as resins, pigments and additives, while the use of
solvents in the US paint and coating industry continues its long term decline.
Increased use of powder coatings in the durable equipment market, however, will
restrain demand since these coatings have lower material requirements than most
other formulations including water-based, solvent-based and radiation-cured.
Offsetting this weakness will be growth opportunities within the specialty and
efforts are focused on traffic paint, packag-ing coatings and marine coatings.
Study Coverage
Details on these and other key findings are available in a new Freedonia study,
Paint & Coating Materials, priced at $3500. This study provides historical
data for the years 1989, 1994 and 1999, with forecast provided for 2004 and
2009. Demand is given in pounds.
Market share is included for key suppliers, along with an overview of
competitive strategies, recent merger and acquisition activity, regulatory
issues and the macro-economy. Also, profiles are presented for the major
suppliers of paint and coating materials.
