Abstract
The market is currently stable as it is closely linked to food transportation,
which tends to be only marginally affected by, for example, economic slowdowns
or international crises. However, competition is fierce and the market remains
highly challenging.
A moderate growth in units sold is forecast as demand for food from southern
Europe to the north increases, but growth will also reflect increasing prices
for both refrigeration units and body insulation.
Prices have decreased for almost 10 years without interruption, as the 2
dominant players were challenged on the different national and regional markets.
However, as no real threat came out for the big 2, the war on prices seems to
have stopped during 2002 and forecasts consider them on the increase up to
pre-crisis level.
The prices are the main competitive factor for small vehicles, quality is more
important for larger vehicles and trailers. Small vehicles mainly stay local,
while trucks and trailers are used for international travel and need a system
that is less likely to give trouble while on the way.
In the report, the following trends have been identified:
1. Trends towards smaller vehicles
2. Rising prices starting from 2002
3. National and European legislation promoting sales in volume and value (the
use of more expensive systems is encouraged)
