Abstract
Lack of Validation and Proof of Concept Studies of Utility of SNPs in Drug
Research and Diagnostics
Though some success stories are slowly emerging about utility of SNPs in drug
discovery there is now a greater need for additional validation and proof of
concept studies. The clinical significance of how the use of SNPs will
ultimately affect clinical outcomes still needs to be proven quite
effectively. Though researchers are reporting significant linkages between
SNPs and drug response, there is still a lot of ground to be covered.
Conversion of these studies into commercial applications is another area which
is yet to see a lot of activity.
Growing Interest in Pharmacogenomics
There has been a growing interest amongst scientists today about the benefits
of pharmacogenomics. Doctors have realized that existing approaches of one
treatment for all will not success in a long term and avoid millions of
dollars being wasted in wrong treatments. SNP detection would greatly augment
the present pharmacogenomics approach. Two of the main uses of the SNP
detection in identifying the contribution of individual genes to diseases that
have a complex, multi gene basis, and correlating SNPs with drug
responsiveness would greatly help forwarding the science of pharmacogenomics.
Potential to Change the Way Healthcare is Dispensed Today
SNP's are expected to change the way healthcare is dispensed by ushering in
the era of personalized medicine. The main goal of SNP is to detect specific
gene alterations which are the reason behind a particular disease and how it
progresses. SNP's also play an important role in drug discovery during target
validation and target identification stages and to increase the productivity
of the drug discovery process.
