Abstract
This Government Insights report discusses how government IT managers have a lot
of decisions to make in the months ahead related to the personal computers
within their organizations. The Federal Desktop Core Configuration rules,
security upgrades, the looming end of Microsoft' s support for Windows XP, and
other issues mean that government PCs will need either significant upgrades or
outright replacement. To help with this decision process, this document has
been created, which outlines all the issues. The document comes with a very
detailed Excel spreadsheet, which serves as a powerful assessment tool to help
federal managers survey their equipment and calculate whether it' s more
cost-effective to upgrade, replace, or migrate to a new client system. IPv6 and
server-side upgrades are also addressed.
"Federal IT managers face more PC-related challenges than they may realize,"
said Shawn P. McCarthy, research director for Government Infrastructure
Optimization and Vendor programs at Government Insights. "They need to do a
detailed assessment and a spending analysis to determine if it' s cheaper to
upgrade or replace their PCs, or even consider a third option such as migration
to a thin client system."
