Drawing upon in-depth discussions with senior-level representatives at
InterTrust, Microsoft and ContentGuard, this report explains the history of
DRM standardisation efforts, summarises the current status of the relevant
DRMs, both fixed and mobile and then provides a detailed description of the
most interesting initiative in the market today: the DRM interoperability
framework being developed by the Coral Consortium.
Closely aligned with OMA DRM V2.0, Coral is an ambitious project aimed at the
consumer media market which has received the blessing of the recorded music
industry and practically all the key consumer electronics brands. First
announced in October 2004, the consortium is expected to issue a first release
of specifications within a few months.
But is Coral simply too ambitious? Perhaps a more likely solution is an
interoperability agreement between Apple and Microsoft at some point in the
future? On the other hand, perhaps Apple will maintain its current momentum
and emerge as the dominant force in the market, marginalising all others?
This report offers a balanced assessment of six plausible market development
trajectories, of which a Coral-based DRM interoperability regime is just one.
The report goes on to outline a number of future developments in DRM based on
existing market trends.
