Abstract

This Health Industry Insights report examines the state of high-level systems biology modeling adoption within the pharmaceutical industry, the progress and prospects for modeling technology providers, and key applications for high-level modeling throughout drug discovery and development. Access to high-level systems biology modeling enables researchers to interactively leverage accumulated biological knowledge in the form of biological pathways and systems and to rapidly characterize and predict drug effects and identify associated biomarkers.

The technology is achieving success stories with early adopters, including major players such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Novartis. Wider adoption remains measured, but awareness is growing rapidly as demonstrated by rising PubMed citations, FDA efforts to stimulate modeling and simulation, and increasing public disclosure of promising results by early adopters. Building on these published successes by early adopters, broad adoption of high-level systems biology modeling is expected to occur over the next five years.

"While it's not yet possible to fully simulate human biology, current efforts in high-level systems biology modeling demonstrate significant progress toward that goal," said Alan Louie, Ph.D., research director for Health Industry Insights.
