Abstract

This IDC study examines the developments of Telstras next-generation network (NGN) strategies and future plans. The study also looks at Telstras network infrastructure and how it will evolve to meet the carriers network and service provisioning plans.

Convergence of voice and data on wireline and wireless networks brought about by IP technology is also accelerating the adoption of converged networks, devices, and multimedia platforms. This sector is likely to enjoy healthy expansion over the next five years. Fuelling the market are advancements in technologies, faster wired and wireless infrastructures, and new device form factors and applications. In an effort to capture that growth potential, Telstra, Australias largest network operator, has unveiled its strategies and is embarking in a new organisational structure for 2005. "Telstra is making the right move in shifting the companys focus away from stove pipe networks consisting of silo operations of fixed line, mobile, broadband, and data which prove to be a more costly and less effective way of growth. Telstra is looking towards implementing an all-IP NGN," says Landry Fevre, research director, Telecommunications and Consumer Digital Markets, IDC Australia.
