Abstract

This IDC study details results from IDC's 2006 Consumer Panel Home Networking Survey. Home networking has reached the mainstream of broadband subscribers, and as the market matures, its focus is shifting from PC-centric to multimedia-centric home networking applications, such as streaming music and videos from the Internet and PC to the television and home stereo. IDC's 2006 Consumer Panel Home Networking Survey finds strong evidence for accelerating interest in multimedia networking applications by early adopters, with the rest of the broadband market following their trail.

"Home networkers are finally embracing the multimedia applications of their networks. The proliferation of digital multimedia content, not just user-owned and -created content but online audio and video as well, has helped create a demand for the ability to send media around the home, and wireless home networks have proven to be up to the task. However, the devices, services, and channels for multimedia home networking still have to mesh for home networks to complete the transition," said Jonathan Gaw, research manager for IDC's Consumer Markets: Home Networking program.
