Abstract
This IDC study provides an overview and analysis of the carrier capex market in
Japan today. Robust and rapid growth of Japan' s broadband and FTTH subscriber
base, the need to build-out fast, intelligent and low-cost next generation
networks (NGNs), mobile number portability (MNP), the emergence of new mobile
carriers, and the growing adoption of consumer and enterprise VoIP are
principal market factors influencing carriers' capex decisions. The key network
segment driving carrier capex growth for the next few fiscal years will be the
access.
"Factors influencing the selection of NGN architectures include reduced capex
and opex, network manageability, investment protection, and to an extent, the
installed base. Equipment vendors - local or foreign - who are able to address
most or all of these issues will have a clear advantage," says George Hoffman,
research manager, Communications Research, IDC Japan.
