Abstract
This IDC study presents IDC' s analysis of utility grid product components and
our analysis of the drivers, inhibitors, and business models and opportunities
within the market. Grid-based utility computing products (or utility grids) are
computing solution sets where vendors use grid concepts and technology to
deliver vendor-owned computational resources (e.g., compute cycles, storage,
and use of application software) to customers via dedicated networks, the
Internet, or both.
"The utility computing model is not entirely new; however, the combination of
advances in underlying technologies and expanding demand with scientific and
engineering markets may allow utility computing providers to create successful
business models based on providing a broad range of products and services to an
expanding technical computing market." - Christopher Willard, IDC research vice
president, Technical Computing Systems
