This IDC study contains an overview of IDC' s investigations into the emerging
grid opportunity.
"Grid technology has been positioned as anything from the next big thing to a
niche market opportunity for the technical computing market," said John
Humphreys, program director, Enterprise Virtualization Software. "IDC has
looked at the potential of grids as well as the risks and hurdles the
technology faces in order to move out from a niche opportunity and become more
broadly adopted. We believe that grids, as a technology, hold significant
potential, especially if the technology can break out from the HPC marketplace
and if it can capture the attention of commercial users. IDC believes 2007 will
be a make-or-break year for the adoption of grids in the enterprise."
