Abstract
This IDC study reviews the inkjet printer and MFP markets, with a specific
focus on the number of these devices that incorporate photo printing
capability. The proliferation of digital image-capturing devices has driven the
increasing need for photo printing support. IDC anticipates that the
anticipated growth in digital cameras will have a positive impact on the inkjet
printer and MFP markets, particularly in the aftermarket opportunity for photo
paper and photo inks. In fact, IDC believes that photo printing support will
evolve from a nice-to-have feature to a common specification of most all inkjet
devices by the end of the forecast period. In 2005, 70% of all inkjet devices
were considered to be photo devices, or 19.09 million devices. By 2010, the
percentage is expected to increase to 88%, or 21.09 million units.
"Now that photographic images from digital cameras can be produced on inkjet
devices, the possibilities for increased aftermarket revenue (e.g., supplies,
media) are enhanced. IDC sees the adoption of digital cameras fueling a natural
progression of the inkjet market," said Keith Kmetz, program vice president for
IDC' s Hardcopy Peripherals Solutions and Services program.
