Abstract

This IDC study analyzes the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ videogame market by hardware and software segmentation as well as the current market environment and emerging trends. Moreover, this study presents a five-year shipment and revenue forecasts for videogame hardware and software for the 2007-2011 period.

"Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony are expected to execute varied and differentiated strategies in the next-generation battle. On the gaming level, Microsoft and Sony are fighting head to head in the hard-core gamer market whereas Nintendo is targeting the outskirts of that circle. However, both Microsoft and Sony' s consoles will play a key role in their wider corporate visions. The Xbox 360 is positioned to become a media-streaming device that connects a media center PC with a consumer electronics (CE) device while the PS3 is being positioned as a fully configured next-generation media hub for the home and will play a pivotal role in Sony' s overall high-definition (HD) entertainment strategy. Nintendo, a company that is only competent in gaming, has indicated that the Wii is purely for that and little else," says Jun-Fwu Chin, senior analyst, Software Research, IDC Malaysia.
