Abstract
This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J7400307)
presents the shipment records of the Japan tape drive and tape automation
markets from 2004 to 2006 as well as market forecasts from 2007 to 2011. Both
shipment records and forecasts were analyzed in terms of revenue and unit
shipment as well as unit shipment by platform. Tape drive shipment records and
forecasts were analyzed by storage capacity while tape automation shipments and
forecasts were analyzed in terms of number of cartridges. Tape technologies
include half-inch cartridges (3480/3490, 3590, 3592, TS1120, and
9840/9940/T10000), LTO, digital linear tape (DLT)/super digital linear tape
(SDLT), 8mm, Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT)/Super Advanced Intelligent Tape
(SAIT), digital data storage (DDS)/digital audio tape (DAT), scalable linear
recording (SLR), Travan, DLT-1, and VXA.
"It is time to review traditional backup systems in Japan companies and there
is a growing tendency for companies to be more active toward backup
investments. It is necessary for tape storage suppliers to devise product and
sales strategies in response to these corporate trends," observes Ayuchi
Takamatsu, research analyst, Storage Systems, IDC Japan.
