Abstract
This IDC study explores the forces driving an expansion in the use of
file-based storage solutions within organizations. The continued expansion in
file-based information is affecting enterprises across a wide range of
industries and geographies. As the needs of enterprises evolve, they will need
specialized file-based storage solutions that address different use cases, such
as management of large files, sequential file access, optimized performance for
write- or read-intensive applications, or capacity growth independent of
performance needs. The creation of large file repositories in many enterprises
presents major new opportunities for storage suppliers, but only if they make
significant additional investments in advancing archival disk storage systems,
cluster file systems, file virtualization, and more sophisticated information
management software solutions.
"In the near future, the management and organization of file-based information
will become the primary task for many storage administrators in corporate
datacenters, and this will have a significant impact on how companies assess
storage solutions in terms of systems' performance, operational efficiency, and
file services intelligence." - Richard Villars, vice president, Storage Systems
research
"Enterprises will need to better understand their information management needs
before investing in a file services technology. A short-term solution today may
seem economical but may become expensive if file-based storage needs are not
well understood and forecast upfront." - Noemi Greyzdorf, manager, Storage
Software research
"Suppliers of disk storage systems and their partners have an incredible
opportunity to help customers stay afloat in a sea of file-based information.
However, a single approach or technology will not fit all environments. The key
to success will be to identify the appropriate solution for varying customer
needs." - Brad Nisbet, program manager, Storage Systems research
