Abstract

This study defines the current market situation and likely future development of next-generation access services, with a focus on three technologies - very high speed digital subscriber line (VDSL), metro Ethernet, and DOCSIS 3.0 cable services. It describes the advantages and disadvantages of each technology, and examines current and planned deployments across Western Europe on a country-by-country basis. It also describes current offerings from operators around Europe, before forecasting the growth of the market over the next five years. Finally, it raises some issues that operators need to consider when planning their next-generation access strategies, and the key attributes of an attractive offering.

"The competitive landscape will typically dictate that operators will not be able to charge substantially more for next-generation access alone than they can for first-generation broadband access," said Jan Hein Bakkers, research manager at IDC. "They will have to increase loyalty and ARPU by using the ability to offer more and higher quality services."
