Abstract
This document identifies and discusses the top 10 predictions that IDC believes
will have a significant impact on the Western European software market during
2008. These trends relate to key events occurring in applications, business
intelligence, application development and deployment, security software,
storage software, and system software.
The predictions presented in this study provide valuable input for software
vendors competing in the European software markets as well as for organizations
embarking on or in the midst of software implementations.
"New technologies such as software as a service, virtualization, and
service-oriented architecture will start to significantly impact the European
software market in many distinct ways, as exemplified in the 10 predictions of
this document. Interestingly, these underlying shifts enable new combinations
of software technologies and services and offer better business value for
customers. However, vendors must realign quickly for these new ' constellations'
and this entails finding new partners and acquisition targets in what used to
be unrelated areas," said Bo Lykkegaard, program manager, European Enterprise
Applications and Services, at IDC.
